Museum of Tropical Queensland
The Museum of Tropical Queensland (MTQ) is a branch of the Queensland Museum; the only one north of Brisbane. Located on Flinders Street in Townsville, the iconic building gazes across Ross Creek. It offers a wide range of educational programs, resources and activities for all ages. Take your child along for a few interesting, informative hours where you can discuss, question and examine loads of displays. Then, share some light refreshments in the Galley Café to debrief!
Guided tours
The Museum offers guided tours led by volunteers. These offer a fascinating insight into the exhibits and, especially from a child’s eye view, are particularly jam-packed with wonder and awe.
HMS Pandora gallery
There are tons of things to see and do for children on school holidays including the star attraction, the HMS Pandora gallery. It features hundreds of fascinating artefacts recovered from the wreck, now on display for children to discover. Kids can also be a part of the Gun Team on HMS Pandora and learn how to load and fire a cannon, the same way it was done in the 1700s.
Enchanted Rainforest
Hugely popular with kids is the Enchanted Rainforest which focuses on one of north Queensland’s most iconic ecosystems. It transports visitors into the light and shade of tropical Queensland’s unique rainforest environment. There, children learn about rainforest plants and animals in a fun and safe setting and can play on the slide and rope bridge.
For an eye-opening day out, discover the Museum of Tropical Queensland and watch your child become engaged in the fascinating history of the sunshine state and the creatures who live there. Call the MTQ today for more information.
