The Workshops Rail Museum

A campus of the Queensland Museum, is Australia's premier rail museum and is situated at North Ipswich, 40 minutes from the centre of Brisbane. Open every day (except Good Friday, ANZAC Day and Christmas Day) from 9.30am to 5.00pm.

State-of-the-art and wholly interactive, this Australian Tourism Award winning attraction is a Museum with a difference. Hands-on exhibits tell different parts of the rail in Queensland story, multi-media encounters mix learning and play, there’s special areas for children in Nippers Railway, take the controls of a train simulator, or step into the thick of it on a Behind the Scenes Tour of the Working Workshops.

The multi-award winning Workshops Rail Museum has a range of popular activities throughout the year. Upcoming school holiday events for 2011 include:

Bunny Eggventures! 9 and 10 April

Hop to it! Bring the family along for a day bursting with fun to celebrate Easter. Meet The Workshops Bunny and receive a special treat, indulge your artistic side with Easter themed craft at the Eggsploration Station, meet some cute animal babies, and take a ride on the land train. Day out with Thomas - 16 April - 2 May 2011

Thomas is back!  Day out with Thomas returns to delight audiences. ‘Sir Topham Hatt, The Fat Controller’ and Thomas the Tank Engine himself will be visiting The Workshops Rail Museum. So come along, meet Thomas and join in all the fun with storytelling and activities for all.

Build It!  18 June - 17 July 2011

Find out what it really takes to build a train at Build it! Since 1865, the North Ipswich Railway Workshops have been the workplace of thousands of skilled tradesmen who have built and maintained the locomotives, wagons, carriages and machinery needed to create and run the railway in Queensland. Get into the BIG LOUD FUN hands-on activities and walk in the footsteps of past workers to explore the many different trades used onsite and discover what working in a railway Workshop is like.
