Where can you go these days for an amazing day of fun suitable for the whole family, that's also great value for money? The Australian Reptile Park!!
For 60 years this zoo with a difference has been providing visitors an experience totally different to mainstream zoos - a day packed with fascinating and unique displays, free range animals and quirky staff that continue to entertain the young and the young at heart.
Don't miss visiting the crocodile enclosure where the largest saltwater croc in NSW resides. Recently seen on Channel 7's Outback Wildlife Rescue, his name is Elvis and he will 'shake, rattle and roll' as he launches out of the water for his lunch - a must see highlight.
You will also meet Ned, the young red kangaroo who was selected to be part of the production of the blockbuster movie 'Australia'. Ned spent a half day at Fox Studios filming a segment on a set surrounded by outback spinifex and red dirt. "He is very much a star in our eyes," says his keeper Brendan Cook, "He spends his days now wandering freely around the Park with his best friend Emu and loves to interact with visitors."
Successful breeding programs result in loads of babies every year and the Reptile Park is a significant player in breeding Cassowaries, Boobook and Barn owls along with many other parrot and pigeon species. The Park is the only facility in Australia that currently houses King Cobra's and Solomon Island skinks and has successfully bred both.
The Australian Reptile Park is also at the forefront of the national campaign to save the endangered iconic Tasmanian devil, with great success over the past three years. In 2008 11 joeys have been born - a very significant contribution to the mainland insurance population and the Save the Tasmanian Devil Campaign. Watch the devils interact in their enclosure, learn how the deadly cancer is decimating Tasmanian devil numbers and how the Park is helping to ensure the devil is around for generations to come.
